Demo Reels

A demo reel or audition tape is a short tape of your video clips, no longer than 5 minutes, either on videotape or DVD that shows people your best work and hopefully catches their attention enough so they'll call you for a job.

You can send us the material of yourself that you've gathered on VHS or you can visit us at our studio and we'll record your monologues or songs for you. Either way, we'll professionally edit your work into a smashing demo reel. For low cost, you can even have your demo reel/audition tape streamed over the Internet via your profile page at FameandGlory.com. Please Contact Us for details if you would like a professional demo reel added to your arsenal.

Demo Reel Tips:

  • Keep it short: Shorter reels give people an idea of what you can do. If they like what they see on your demo, they'll want to see more of you and they'll be more likely to invite you to an interview. Obviously you want a good collection of material from which to to select, but no more than 15-minutes in total.
  • Show your strengths: Show your best work first. In most cases, talent agents/scouts/casting directors have very little time in which to make a decision. They may never get more than 30-seconds into your reel and may not have to if they like what they see right off.
  • VHS note: If you're going to record your show from TV, please make sure your VHS deck is in SP mode for best quality.
  • Short Scenes: Don't underestimate the value of small scenes. You may want to include any small scenes, even one-liners used on network TV or film.
  • Resume: Always include your resume and a reel breakdown/credit list with your reel.
  • Tape Box: Put your name, phone number (or agent's) and an email address on the tape box in case your paperwork should get lost.
  • Updates: Update your reel at least once a year or more to remove old work or add better examples.
  • Take Care: Don't expect to get your reel back so don't ever send your only copy to anyone.
  • Patience: Agencies get oodles of reels and resumes sent to them every week. Usually, if they're interested, they'll call you. But it still doesn't hurt to follow up with a phone call or e-mail to inquire if they received your material. It will show them you're serious. Just don't call them everyday and make a nuisance of yourself.

Sending Tapes:
The following represent the type of tapes we can and cannot accept and how you should prepare them.

  • We can work with DVD, VHS, SVHS, 8mm, HI8, BetacamSP, DVCam, MiniDV (SP only), DVCPro, and 3/4"SP.
  • We cannot use DigiBeta, Digital8, CDRom or D2.
  • Cue up your tapes and time the distance between scenes. This is very important to save you time and money. If there is more than one scene on a tape, cue to the first one then calculate the time before the next and so forth.
            example:
0:00:00 Me teaching old dog new tricks.
0:21:37 Me reciting Shakespeare love sonnet.
            1:53:13 Me as Santa Claus.
It's best to do this is with a real-time counter which displays an actual elapsed time. For example, you fast-forward the tape five minutes from the start and the counter says 0:05:00, as opposed to one that displays 00000 to 99999. If your VCR doesn't have a time counter, you could use a stopwatch and write the times down between scenes as it plays in real time.

Since everyone is an individual with individual ideas on what they want to do, please Contact Us for more information about the demo reel as a valuable resource.
